Tangier to Chefchaouen Road Trip: Complete Driving Guide

February 3, 20267 min read

Chefchaouen, Morocco’s famous "Blue Pearl," sits roughly 120 km southeast of Tangier in the Rif Mountains. With your own rental car, the drive takes about 2 hours each way — flexible enough to leave in the morning, wander the blue-washed medina all afternoon, and be back in Tangier for dinner, or stay a night for photos at golden hour.

The route

The most common route follows the N2/N16 roads through Tetouan, then climbs into the Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen. The road is paved and well-maintained the entire way, with a mix of highway sections near Tangier and winding mountain curves for the final 30–40 minutes — an SUV or a car with responsive handling is recommended for that last stretch.

Suggested stops along the way

  • Tetouan — a UNESCO-listed medina, about 1 hour from Tangier, worth a short stroll if you leave early.
  • Oued Laou coastal road (alternative scenic route) — longer but stunning Mediterranean views if you have extra time.
  • Ras El Ma spring, just outside Chefchaouen — a popular local spot to see the town’s water source.

Practical driving tips

  1. Fill up on fuel in Tangier or Tetouan — options thin out in the mountains.
  2. Parking in Chefchaouen’s old town is limited; use one of the paid lots near Bab El Ain and walk in.
  3. Mountain roads have frequent curves — take it slow, especially if driving at dusk when livestock can be on the road.
  4. Mobile signal can be patchy in parts of the Rif; download offline maps before leaving Tangier.
For mountain routes like Chefchaouen, we recommend our Volkswagen T-Roc SUV — more clearance and stability on the curves than a compact economy car.

One-way and multi-day options

If you want to continue from Chefchaouen toward Fes or Meknes instead of returning to Tangier, ask about one-way rental options when booking — additional drop-off fees may apply depending on the final destination.
